Did You Know?
When Enid was 14 years old she won a children’s poetry competition, something which drove her to submit more of her articles, poems and stories to magazines.
She was a prolific writer, and in one year is believed to have written an incredible forty books.
Blyton had a clear and focused vision for every one of her stories, and was able to write an amazing ten thousand words of publishable content in a single day.
She would write many of her books on a typewriter which she would balance on her lap.
Blyton often said that she never planned any of her stories in advance; she would merely let her imagination take her from the beginning to the end of a book.
Some of her books were written under the pseudonym Mary Pollock - her middle name and her first husband’s surname.
Blyton approached the BBC many times to try and get adaptations of her work broadcasted, however it wasn’t until 1954 that the first production was finally aired.
She once said “My love of children is the whole foundation of all my work”.
In total, Blyton has sold more than six hundred million books, an amazing achievement.
Most people estimate the number of books Blyton wrote as somewhere between seven and eight hundred (with new works being discovered even today). These include 223 character books, 153 continuation books, 186 novels and 267 educational books.
